After playing some as-yet undefined role in conning/advising @BRMFUN to decide to buy an XF have to now reveal that Mrs. Snail has part exchanged her trusty, capable 3.0D, 275hp, 500ft.lb, 9 year old XF saloon. I tries my best to get her to keep it and just spend the money to do the timing belts and gearbox flush..... but no joy. I even considered keeping it as my daily driver but I just like my 4 wheeled armchair too much. Look at the bloomin thing..... Less than 70k miles - been a very good car. Competent and capable but a little compromised (unlike @BRMFUN 's new estate). So what has she replaced it with? She really likes the seating position in my 10year old Range Rover Sport (she has long term back issues so must be comfy and easy to get in and out... which the XF hasn't been for her lately. She can't drive manuals any more either) but didn't want a car as big as the Range Rover. Enter a 4 cylinder, petrol, 250bhp........ Jaguar. She's gone for an F-Pace because it's "much smaller" than a RRS (bollocks!) Couple of photos to illustrate how small* it is compared to my huge* car. Tiny, isn't it? (I may* have taken liberties with the angle of the photo to emphasise its proportions) Unlike me, she's not impressed with the comedy, clown-car balloon tyres. The interior is lovely - nice, calm cabin with the all-important PROPER KNOBS for temperature, fanspeed and volume. Comfiest car-seats I've sat in. Obviously, being a modern Jag with an ingenium engine, it will inevitably disappear in a ball of flames about 20 seconds after the warranty expires. I'm hoping it will give the same 'level of service' as the outgoing one. Time will tell.
Interestingly Mrs Fun made me look at one of these, but then she decided it was too big, phew, I wanted an estate, anyway she has also not noticed the Sportbrake is longer that said the XF is a low car and with back problems the F Pace would be way easier to alight from! That saloon looks the dogs though
It got better inside..... 'red zone' leather (another luvitorhateit thing but we've got form with red leather interiors haven't we?)
Ahem, Jaguar Red Zone is the same as LR Pimento, is the same colour and grain as a small Green with Orange from Longbridge.... Now how on earth did I find that?
Well had a bit of a Mare today! Before I had the Jag, new tyres and front brake pads were fitted, all positive from my point of view, until today!! I want to upgrade the brakes, (following the discs and pads on 201) anyway turns out there are two disc diameters for my model, so easy enough take the wheel off and measure the discs…….. firstly my small wheel nut wrench bent, then I got serious and used a long 1/2 drive bar and socket, what could go wrong, well I sheared off 3 nuts on the front wheels back wheels are fine, so the idiot that put the brake pads on must have used one hell of a rattle gun!!! On the plus side I found this out whilst at home and the dealer is willing to pay for the nuts to be removed! Apparently this is a Jaguar issue, the wheel nuts must not be over tightened!
75Nm is enough..17mm nuts 85Nm on 19mm nuts 130Nm on the 21mm nuts. The brace you talk of its a socket welded to a bit of coathanger wire? If I ever hear a rattle gun in use in a workshop when doing up, I know they are just amaters.
People with no common sense tightening things up, can just imagine the apprentice going at it with a rattle gun. Hopefully they fitted the brake pads slightly better.
After two afternoons of driving from one "recommended" place to another and them all shaking their head and running away when they saw my wheel nut! This chap sorted my wheel nuts out, as recommended from a Jaguar Forum https://www.removaloflockingwheelnuts.co.uk/ amazing service and made it look so easy, he has a secret special tool joking apart highly recommend for any wheel nut issues!
How long is a piece of string? Also who else are you going to use? From my research this week there are about 4/5 people in England that offer the same service! I had 3 Jaguar broken wheel nuts, that are embedded in a deep wheel, the charge was around £85. Some broken wheel nuts will be cheaper and others more expensive and apparently locking wheel nuts are easy to get off and therefore cheaper!
Just for clarity, the stud failed as you attempted to remove the nut, or the nut failed on the stud resulting in it just spinning? £85 doesnt sound much if they came to you, removed your immoveable/removable nuts. Did they then replace the studs and supply new nuts? I recall only a few years ago, I left a locking nut key on the windscreen wiper - so I'd notice and put it away 'next time' I used the car. I noticed when I gave a flick wipe whilst accelerating down the motorway slip road.. It took me a decent day to remove the four lockers...Break up and tug off the outer which leaves a nut with a circular diameter, so drill and split as none of my rounded nut sockets could handle the torque to crack off.. All done within the alloy wheel pocket. Grrr.
The wheel nuts on XF's are apparently prone to corrosion from the inside and the top part is hollow, if they are over tightened, the top of the nut started to break away from the shoulder! When the next person undoes them.... off comes the top half of the nut leaving the shoulder firmly locking the wheel in place and nothing to get purchase on! The cure now is solid wheel nuts, which are now fitted but I supplied, and I met him at an agreed place as he was 2 plus hours away from me! Personally I agree quite a bargain! Edit: just to update I wanted the wheels removed to look at the brakes! Front pads were replaced by the idiot that overtightened the wheels (I have now had money back from selling dealer re broken nuts ) the discs really should have been replaced the rear pads are low and discs ok! So I have just parted with a lot of money to MTec brakes and EBC, soon will have drilled and grooved discs all round and red stuff pads
